Ask GeoMan...

I saw Dante's Peak last week. How accurate is it?

Great movie, huh? It seems to me that Dante's Peak was very accurate with how it describes and shows the various volcanic features and processes associated with a composite volcanic cone. I do have some trouble with the timing, however. Many of the scenes seemed to compress time quite a bit - such as the dissolving boat in the lake. While this type of reaction can occur, it would probably take longer (and you certainly wouldn't have fish floating by while the boat is sinking). For more information, visit the U.S.G.S. website on Dante's Peak.
