Why is feldspar the most abundant mineral when quartz is the most common?

Actually, feldspar IS the most common - it averages approximately 60% of all igneous rocks. Quartz is also common, but is limited to felsic rocks (granite, etc.). Some of the many different varieties of feldspar occur in all magma types (expect ultramafic).
