Where does the water in a river come from if it's not raining?

 

Good question! Actually, when it IS raining, most of the water soaks into the ground, which acts like a big sponge. Only the excess water runs off in rivers and streams. This groundwater slowly moves through the earth, and is what feeds the surface flow when it isn't raining.
