From time to time I get requests for a study guide to help with an upcoming exam.
As a way to possibly help fill this need, I offer the following poem,
submitted by Kendra Curtis (2009/10).

In the way, way back,
You tried to teach us
How atoms bounce
That space is time
The Big Bang theory
It was waaaay over my head
Our first lab, to
Encompassing ALL of
Then onto the plates
That cruise around
That they move
That’s what earthquakes
Richter and his
Exponentially growing
Elastic strain
Eventually gives and
You opened for me
To the reality of what
Yes, the Cascadia
There won’t be much left
That first awful test
As we got our first taste
Then off on a field trip
To look at float and
An ophiolite? What the
And Mike just a’ smilin’
That he had a secret
Was how all this red dirt
Ultra mafic and
That had somehow escaped
Then on to minerals
Identifications with the
But, who ever peeked
Because, as you know,
Most of the minerals
By sight, by feel and
The rocks were harder
Make up a name if you don’t
Streak and cleavage
What do you got?
They are terms for tests
ID the crystals
You brought cool rocks
From your awesome
Extra credit and
Go on, take a stab
Volcanism
Places where the
Mafic; great big
Felsic one’s though
Then winter break
with nothin’ to do
|
Come January 4th
of one-oh-one
Most of us giddy
Cause we knew what the hell
We learned about maps
To find our way in the woods
Contour intervals
Locating bench marks
Relief and gradient
By using our noggins
Then head long we ran
Layers in time
Piling up, like the
And easy to read
This will be on the test!
What is the pressure?
Then down we went
Where the brittle and ductile
There in the deep
and remain that way,
From limestone to marble
To study the texture
Another test down
That mysterious quarter
Immersed in the weather
We learned about watersheds
The dew point and clouds
The Coriolis effect, it was
The weather, its been
And the water itself?
Our planet has scars
As everything moves
Permeability and porosity
the rocks in the ground
The Love Canal forum,
Who’s fault was it really?
For us to reverse
We’ve all seen the future
Thus ended the winter
Though we now realize
Then a week to ourselves
What would come next
|
And those who returned
Looked at a room full
Roll call and rules
A lot to take in for
We started with glaciers
Learning that separate
Moraines and tarns,
It’s a monster fer shur
Rafting erratics
As it flows AWAY from the
A land can be arid
It’s a lack of moisture
We learned of places
Where water’s scarce and
Latitude and over
Arid lands are
Then off we sailed towards
economic Geology
Magnesium balls,
Mining practices and
Copper, silver, platinum
Metals all, heavy and
All the easy stuffs
Now we have to
Or drill off shore
Tuning out the
Pump it faster -
What environmental disaster?B.P.,
A circuitous route
Back into our history,
With faith in those whom
And thought about life
The science of evolution
Learning new words like
Evidence of life
Trying to trace lines from
It’s all so subjective
To link separate species
And how did the land
How did the water appear
Did our planet get slammed by
How did it happen and
Did it bring DNA
I take it all in good faith,
I think we’re all sad
Spent the last exciting
I, myself will miss Barnaby
I don’t know about you -
And while flickers of knowledge
We’re all thankful to you
