In the US, Natural Gas (NG) fired electricity has now overtaken coal in terms of overall contribution to us Electricity. Notice in this graph the relatively slow rise of renewables. 
But the US is not the world: 
In the US, wind energy growth was really gaining momentum through 2012 and then it slacked off, for reasons to be discussed later.
