This assignment is related to the video, the Cadillac Desert, An American Nile which was shown in class on Tuesday.

1. Glen Canyon dam has an annual output of approximately 5 billion KWHs. As stated in the first assignment, Coal Fired electricy is rated at 450,000 MW.
   a) How many Glen Canyon dams would need to be built to replace all of this coal fired electricity?

   b) How much total land area would be innundated by these dams?

   • assume a flow rate of 500 cubic meters per second for Glen Canyon dam and convert that to cubic meters per year
   • Surface area = Volume/Depth
   • The depth of lake powell behind Glen Canyon Dam is 40 meters

   c) Find out which US states have an equivalent surface area.

2. Based on the video shown in class, along with any other source material you might reference, write a two page argument either agreeing or disagreeing with the following premise:
   America had little choice at the time but to develop the West as rapidly as possible and hydroelectric power was the only sensible choice to provide the needed power
