whom to blame the most
burning of coal for electricity
gasoline for transportation
this is where improvements
in average fuel economy or changes in transportation styles really matter
burning of natural gas for electricity and space heating
associated with fossil fuel mining/drilling/etc
CO2 is emitted from the calcination process of limestone
(to produce lime),
from combustion of fuels in the kiln, as well as from power generation needed to make
the cement. Estimates suggest that 5%-10% of anthropogenic carbon emission is due to cement
and this is increasing due to activities in Asia.
Note that the 2008 figure has been estimated to be 1.45 billion tons, up from 1.35 billion in 2007. The Cement Authority
The current production rate in the world is about 3 billion tons per year. That's equivalent to you carrying around 1000 pounds of new cement every year!
