The Good Cop/Bad Cop Simulation:

The Speeding Cow

For this exercise you will do all trials using the 60 mph speed button. You are also only concerned with the first 5 listed officers.

Each of these officers has a radar gun with different amounts of random and systematic errors. Your job is to run a trial, compile the data and determine who is the good cop (the one with the honest radar gun - lowest errors) and who is the bad cop (the one with the doctored radar gun - highest systematic error).

Note: you can use Excel to enter in the values and calculate the average and standard deviation, or if you have a Google account, use google docs spreadsheet to do the same. If you have neither, go here: ave calculator .

  • Which one appears to have the highest random error?

  • Suppose a radar detector has a fixed random error of +/- 10mph, what is the accuracy if you measure a speed of 40 mph; 100 mph?

  • If 3 cows are entering a speed zone of 40 mph and an officer is using the same radar detector with at +/-10 mph error, which one will get pulled over for speeding? Speeds are 50 mph, 47 mph, 25 mph
