Personal Evidence for Climate Change Responses:

Hotter Summers and Milder Winters

  • As a child, I distinctly remember summer as lasting one to two weeks of upper-70's/lower-80's F. The last three to four years I have come to realize that summers now last several months of continuous 80's-100's F.

  • Summers here are far hotter than I recall as a child. For reference I've lived in Oregon my entire life.

  • I've noticed and researched that on average the summers are getting warmer and longer and the winters are becoming more mild.

  • The summers have gotten hotter and the winters have gotten colder both in Oregon and in Texas, where I'm from.

  • Summer months becoming longer and hotter, and winter months becoming more extreme (especially on the East Coast) indicates that the climate is no longer stable.

Precipitation

  • I moved to Oregon three years ago, and every year people have said "It usually rains more than this. You'll see." Instead, it gets dryer and dryer.

Increasing Extreme Weather

  • And there are increasingly frequent natural disasters and extreme weather all of which can be attributed to increasing atmospheric CO2.

  • My personal evidence that climate change is occurring is witnessing abnormal weather patterns around the state of Oregon, seeing deforestation wherever you drive, media coverage of the drought in California.

Heresay, etc

  • A growing body of credible scientific research

  • Because I'm always told that a majority of informed people believe. Extreme and unusual weather patterns seem to support them.

  • The increase in discussions about climate change in educational settings.

  • It is always an issue that is addressed during political debates.

  • Because the news is always talking about climate change, specifically global warming.

  • I learned about CO2 emissions and its impact on climate change through classes.

  • Another piece of evidence is that pretty much all scientists agree that it is happening.

  • I've heard about climate change from various people as well as credible news outlets. The recent rash of wildfires is also a result of climate change...so I've heard.

  • I've been told that the climate is different in certain regions where some people have lived for over 15 years. I have also been told that weather events that are out of the norm are attributed to climate change.

  • There has been an increase of abnormal weather patterns throughout the world with many weather and temperature records being set.

Actual Personal Evidence:

  • I'm from Bend, OR and I grew up skiing at Mt. Bachelor. Last year the mountain suffered from high temperatures and low snowpack, which resulted in a terrible ski season. I've read that as climate change continues, the Pacific Northwest will increase in temperature, which obviously means less fluffy, dry snow and more wet snow and rain. Quite depressing for the ski community...

  • I've grown up in Eugene my entire life and I have never witnessed a summer this hot. Usually we only see a few days above 90 degrees however this summer it was that warm for weeks. After researching I saw that it was all time high temperatures in many different regions of the world. This is just the most recent way I've personally experienced climate change.

  • Having lived in Oregon my whole life, I've seen in my own lifetime how weather patterns have been very (and increasingly) extreme and irregular, such as this past summer which was much hotter and drier than normal, and past winters where there have been unusually huge amounts of snow. This for me has been evidence of climate change here in Oregon.

Best responses:

Data shows that average temperatures have been generally rising over the last century or so as have the amount of CO2 and several other gases. There have been spikes and dips in the amount of these atmospheric gases previously in the Holocene and the history of Earth, but the recent increase has occurred incredibly quickly in comparison.

In all honesty, I don't believe I have personal evidence that climate change is occurring beyond being told that it exists. I have seen pictures of the melting ice caps that float around the internet, heard people talking about the pollution in large cities, and the damage being don't to the atmosphere. However, I have never taken it upon myself to do my own investigation and reading about climate change that would help me support this claim with a valid argument.
