Cultural resistance to change is a very real problem in lots of areas. This phenomenon is often called Cultural Interia. Often times, this inertia simply exists for its own sake as the reasons for a particular cultural principal may have been long forgotten. Out mantra: Because we have always done it that way"
A good example of this cultural inertis is continuing to implement Daylight savings time
The 8 reasons that culture resists change
- There isn't any real need for the change
- The change is going to make it harder for them to meet their needs
- The risks seem to outweigh the benefits
- They don't think they have the ability to make the change
- They believe the change will fail
- Change process is being handled improperly by management
- The change is inconsistent with their values
- They believe those responsible for the change can't be trusted
Mapping this into resistance to climate change:
-
Climate change is not that significant so there is no real need to change our current lifestyles, etc.
Reducing consumption or fossil fuel use is too hard and creates too much of a compromise.
-
My short term economic security is far more important than long term benefit for the planetary ecosystem.
-
I am an individual, what can I do?
-
Since there is no silver bullet solution, I am not compelled to change.
-
We don't trust our government to make a fair set of regulations
We are not part of nature; we control nature; nature does not control us.
No trust in science, no trust in government.
